  • Two Chicago Brothers On Parole Charged In Murder Of Nykea Aldridge

Posted 2016-08-29 20:15:14 by: Deleted Member

Chicago police on Sunday said they have arrested two brothers and charged them with the fatal shooting of basketball star Dwyane Wade’s cousin as she pushed a baby in a stroller, a murder that has stunned a city plagued by a surge in gang-related violence. In a case that has emerged as a talking point in the U.S. presidential race, Darwin Sorrells Jr., 26, and Derren Sorrells, 22, are facing charges of first-degree murder and attempted murder in the death of Nykea Aldridge, a 32-year-old mother of four, police said.   The brothers, described as “documented gang members,” are convicted felons who were out of prison on parole at the time of the shooting, police officials said at a Sunday press briefing.   Aldridge was hit when the suspects opened fire at the intended target, a driver of a car who told authorities he worked for Uber and was dropping off passengers. In a briefing on Sunday, police did not say why the driver was targeted except to note that the man was from outside the area and appeared to have an exchange of words with the suspects. One of the brothers was required to wear a monitoring device as a condition of his home confinement while on parole, except from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. when he was allowed to conduct personal business. It was during those hours that the shooting occurred, police said. Darwin Sorrells was sentenced to six years in prison in 2013 on a gun charge but was “let out early,” police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said on Twitter on Sunday. NATIONAL ATTENTION In a city with as many as 90 shootings a week, homicides in Chicago this year are on track to reach their highest since 1997, raising concern about a reversal in the declining rate of serious crime in the country’s largest cities in recent years. Aldridge’s death has drawn national attention because of the connection to Wade, a 12-time National Basketball Association All-Star who signed a two-year, $47.5 million deal this summer ...

  • Hunky 'Heartthrobs And Hound Dogs' Calendar Raises Money For Dog Rescues

Posted 2016-08-29 19:19:21 by: Deleted Member

2017 is lookin’ mighty fine.  Hunky police officers, firefighters and military veterans from across Texas recently posed with precious rescue pups for a new calendar that’s raising money for local rescue centers. The issue is part of photographer Ricki Beason’s annual “Heartthrobs and Hound Dogs” series ― and we got our hands on some promo pics so you know exactly what to get pumped about.  Copies of the “Heartthrobs and Hound Dogs 2017” calendar are $20 each and will begin shipping on Sept. 10. Proceeds will go to six Texas dog rescues. All the dogs featured in the issue were available for adoption at the time of the photoshoot, and some have already been placed in new homes. Beason told The Huffington Post that she hopes the popular project can carry out an important mission.  “The main [goal] is to put a spotlight on rescue dogs and to show they are just as amazing as any other dog and they’re just as beautiful and just as loving,” she said. “It’s also to put a spotlight on our police officers and our veterans and our firefighters who are serving our country and our cities. And they take the little time that they have to support a cause like this.” All the men involved are huge dog lovers, Beason added, and some even have rescue pups of their own. This made the photoshoot process a blast, even if there were some challenges.  “There was one dog that had so much energy, my veteran had to literally run him around in between shoots,” she said, laughing. “He was literally jogging him around for 30 minutes.” To learn more or to pre-order the calendar, visit the website here.    - This feed and its contents are the property of The Huffington Post, and use is subject to our terms. • Obama Administration Considers Ending For-Profit Immigrant Detention

Posted 2016-08-29 18:48:18 by: Deleted Member

Private prison contractors may lose the ability to run immigrant detention centers as for-profit businesses. Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson is ordering a review of the agency’s policy of using private contractors to run immigrant detention centers, according to a statement issued Monday. The news follows last month’s landmark decision by the Department of Justice to phase out the privatization of federal prisons, after a scathing report by the DOJ’s inspector general said the private facilities were more dangerous than those run by the Bureau of Prisons and in need of closer monitoring. Reform advocates widely applauded the DOJ’s landmark decision, but immigrant rights groups questioned why the same logic shouldn’t apply to the civil immigrant detention system, which keeps tens of thousands of people locked up every night. The same two companies, the Corrections Corp of America and the GEO Group, handle the lion’s share of federal contracting for both privatized prisons and immigrant detention centers. Johnson appears to have noted the criticism. He asked the Homeland Security Advisory Council, which is chaired by Judge William Webster, to review its policies for using private contractors to run immigrant detention centers and submit a report by Nov. 30. “Specifically, I have asked that Judge Webster establish a Subcommittee of the Council to review our current policy and practices concerning the use of private immigration detention and evaluate whether this practice should be eliminated,” Johnson wrote in Monday’s statement. GEO Group, the country’s second-largest private prison contractor, said in a statement that it “welcomed” the review, adding that the detention centers under its management had met national standards in previous audits. “We are confident that this independent review will show that GEO has provided needed, cost-effective services that have ...

  • South Carolina Neighborhood Reports Clowns Are Trying To Lure Kids Into The Woods

Posted 2016-08-29 18:40:04 by: Deleted Member

Clown sightings in a South Carolina community have residents on high alert following reports that the masked figures are approaching children and even trying to lure them into nearby woods. The creepy sightings at Greenville’s Fleetwood Manor Apartment Complex allegedly began on Aug. 19, when a resident relayed that her son said he saw clowns “whispering and making strange noises” in the nearby woods, according to an incident report obtained by The Huffington Post. The resident, who was not identified, said she went to investigate and saw “several clowns in the woods flashing green laser lights.” The figures then ran away into the woods. Adding to the family’s unease, the following night, at the same time of 10:30 p.m., the woman noted that her oldest son said he heard “chains and banging” on their front door. In the early hours of Aug. 20, around 2:30 a.m., another resident said she was walking home when she saw “a large-figured clown with a blinking nose, standing under a post light near the garbage dumpster area.” The woman said the clown waved at her so she waved back while safely making her way home. The suspect did not approach her or harm her in any way, the incident report states. Several children said the clowns have appeared in woods behind one apartment building and that they “try to persuade them into the woods further by displaying large amounts of money.” The kids said they believe that the clowns live in a house located near a pond at the end of a trail in the woods. The responding Greenville Sheriff’s deputy reported that they indeed found such a house, but no clowns or any signs of suspicious activity. They noted in their report that there is no video surveillance in the community. The apartment complex’s building management sent out a warning to residents on Wednesday: In the letter, which was posted to social media Friday, the property manager reminded ...

  • Jailed Over Traffic Tickets, This Mother Attempted Suicide. Here's How She Got To That Point.

Posted 2016-08-29 17:47:15 by: Deleted Member

Donyale Thomas was a 32-year-old mother living on a fixed income in Berkeley, Missouri when she was jailed in March 2011 after failing to pay hundreds of dollars in fines for municipal code violations, including traffic violations. She was put in a windowless cell with two bunk beds that held as many as four women. Thomas has spent time in several jails in St. Louis County. She is one of the clients represented by ArchCity Defenders in a lawsuit against the city of Ferguson over the city’s unconstitutional practices. Thomas talked to The Huffington Post as part of our ongoing series of stories about deaths in jails across the country. Note: The following account includes a graphic description of Thomas’ suicide attempt, which may be disturbing to some readers. As told to Ryan J. Reilly. “Until you’ve been put in that situation … you never know how a person would feel when being locked up, and you have nobody to stand by your side or defend you. Officers can be very cruel and mean when they have you in a jail cell... I really didn’t do anything to somebody in there to be denigrated as a human being, to be disrespected as a woman. You have all kinds of things going through your head, so it gets to the point where you think, ‘Okay, I just want to find my way out of this.’ I wasn’t able to bathe or anything or take care of my hygiene. I wasn’t able to see my kids. There were like three or four women in the cell. Pads were laying around the cells... I’m not able to take a shower, I’ve got no phone calls, I can’t speak to nobody... I didn’t understand how my name ever made it to that docket for me to go to court. My mind started going in other routes and started thinking all opposite things and crazy things. I don’t feel like a person who has a traffic ticket is supposed to be confined to one cell like an animal, like I did something so horrible. When a person is ...

  • Missing Spring Breaker Was Raped, Shot And Fed To Alligators, FBI Agent Testifies

Posted 2016-08-29 17:15:07 by: Deleted Member

A 17-year-old girl who vanished outside a South Carolina resort in 2009 was gang-raped before she was murdered and fed to alligators, according to an explosive new report citing an FBI agent’s testimony. An inmate who claims to have witnessed Brittanee Drexel’s final moments recently spoke out about the teen’s death in a stirring jailhouse confessional, according to a federal court transcript obtained by the Post and Courier. FBI Agent Gerrick Munoz testified last week that inmate Taquan Brown, who is serving a 25-year sentence for voluntary manslaughter, said that just days after the Rochester, New York, teen vanished outside Myrtle Beach’s BlueWater Resort, he saw her being held in a “stash house” in McClellanville, South Carolina. It’s the same town, located about 60 miles south of Myrtle Beach, where authorities said her cell phone gave off its last ping. The agent said that Brown alleged that in the house, Brown saw several men, including Timothy Da’Shaun Taylor, who was 16 at the time, “sexually abusing Brittanee Drexel.” Brown said he met Taylor’s father, Shaun Taylor, at the house and gave him money, according to the FBI testimony cited by the Post and Courier. Brown also said Drexel was “pistol-whipped” for trying to escape, and then he heard two gunshots. Brown assumed that Shaun Taylor shot the girl. He alleged that the teen’s body was later wrapped up and removed from the property. The FBI agent testified that several witnesses have since said that Drextel’s “body was placed in a pit, or gator pit, to have her body disposed of. Eaten by the gators,” according to the Post and Courier’s report. .@FBIColumbia FBI offers $25,000 reward for information regarding disappearance of Brittanee Drexel. @missingkids pic.twitter.com/6KEc3OOqWx— FBI Columbia (@FBIColumbia) June 10, 2016 Drexel was last seen on April ...

  • Misusing Data On Campus Rape

Posted 2016-08-29 17:14:26 by: Deleted Member

Students across the country have just started the fall semester, and undoubtedly some parents are worried. Perhaps they heard of the Department of Education's 2011 Dear Colleague Letter, which called the statistics on sexual violence, "deeply troubling and a call to action for the nation." Or maybe they read Vice President Joe Biden's recent letter stating that 1 in 5 women are sexually assaulted on college campuses. If those numbers were true then we would have a crisis of terrifying proportions. As it turns out, that epidemic is false. A 2014 Department of Justice study found just 6.1 per 1000 (.61%) women in post-secondary institutions were the victims of rape or sexual assault between 1995-2013. While any sexual assault is to be abhorred, these findings do not support claims of rampant sexual abuse. A few weeks ago, ninety law professors issued a white paper in support of the Dear Colleague Letter. Neither the Department of Education, nor Vice President Biden, nor the authors of the White Paper bothered to mention the Department of Justice figures. Instead they point to a 2007 National Institute of Justice study that looked at just two large public universities. The lead researchers were so troubled by the misuse of their findings that they "felt the need to set the record straight" and published a piece in Time Magazine stating "(t)he 1-in-5 statistic is not a nationally representative estimate of the prevalence of sexual assault..." Another oft-cited study is the 2015 Association of American Universities Campus Climate Survey, which found 1 in 4 women surveyed from 27 Institutes of Higher Education had been raped or sexually assaulted while in college. Once again, the authors explicitly wrote that the results were not nationally representative and stating otherwise, "is at least oversimplistic, if not misleading." The authors also acknowledged that because they had such a low response rate their results were likely biased and thus their estimates of ...

  • Donald Trump Is Wrong About Crime In Cities

Posted 2016-08-29 17:13:38 by: Deleted Member

Donald Trump on Monday continued his clumsy efforts to appeal to black voters, tweeting a false claim about “inner-city” crime nearing record highs.   As his campaign again attempts to right itself after plummeting in the polls, Trump has argued that black voters should support him because Democratic policies have failed their communities. He’s largely relied on stereotypes and generalizations to make his case, and it hasn’t been especially effective: Trump’s support among black voters continues to hover in the single digits.  Still, Trump is sticking to this approach even as it alienates the people he’s ostensibly trying to attract. Last week, Nykea Aldridge, cousin of NBA star Dwyane Wade, was shot and killed in Chicago. Trump’s reaction to the death of Aldridge, a mother of four, was to brag that it proved him right about unsafe cities, and to seize on it as evidence that “African-Americans will VOTE TRUMP!” Not even Trump’s campaign manager, Kellyanne Conway, could defend that statement. On Monday, Trump fired off several tweets about crime in cities, again leaning heavily on stereotypes and dubious claims:   Look how bad it is getting! How much more crime, how many more shootings, will it take for African-Americans and Latinos to vote Trump=SAFE!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 29, 2016 Inner-city crime is reaching record levels. African-Americans will vote for Trump because they know I will stop the slaughter going on!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 29, 2016 Now that African-Americans are seeing what a bad job Hillary type policy and management has done to the inner-cities, they want TRUMP!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 29, 2016 There’s a problem with Trump’s claims, though: Violent crime is on the decline nationally, having hit its lowest point in decades in 2014. ...

  • How To Communicate By Email With Someone In Prison

Posted 2016-08-29 16:39:34 by: Deleted Member

It can be difficult to keep in contact with friends and family members when you are in prison, and difficult for those on the outside, too. The CorrLinks system is one tool that can help inmates stay connected, easing the angst of isolation and boredom. CorrLinks is a privately owned company that operates the Trust Fund Limited Inmate Computer System (TRULINCS), which is used by the Federal Bureau of Prisons. It offers prisoners direct access to emails and, while the system is far from perfect, it opens an important window to loved ones and other resources in the community. There are, of course, stipulations and limitations. Not all inmates have access to what is essentially a federal program, although the system may be used to contact incarcerated individuals at state prisons in Iowa and Oklahoma. If an inmate has been incarcerated for reasons that involve the use of a computer, they may not have access. The system does not provide access to the Internet, only the secure TRULINCS system. Attachments, including photographs, cannot be sent. Messages are limited to 13,000 characters. Messages are delivered by institution staff at the time of their choosing, which may be in as little as 2 hours, or up to 1 day or two, and they may review or reject any messages. Messages are not monitored by CorrLinks, but an inmate's communications can be restricted (sometimes with little explanation) by prison authorities. To access and use CorrLinks you can visit their website or download the CorrLinks app, although this requires a paid premium account. To begin, you will receive an invitation, and you will need the inmates' number and identification code. Once your account is set up, the system is very easy to use. If you are having difficulty using CorrLinks, users can access the FAQ page on the website for assistance, online support, or watch the three YouTube videos created which help explain how to use the site, and particularly the feature about video sessions. Ever since Hiddleswift took over the internet and Kim Kardashian welcomed fans to the #KimExposedTaylorParty, Swift has been trying to keep a low profile.
